MAKING THE CONNECTION: YOGA AND FITNESS ROUTINES

Yoga The art of Yoga was designed to be a workout for one's mind, body and spirit. However, in today's world, the general public typically views yoga as a means to relax tight muscles, reduce stress and improve overall strength. Presently, fitness competitors are beginning to realize that yoga improves balance, flexibility and overall coordination-all of which can aid them in their routine performance!

As a choreographer and coach, I can create a routine for just about anyone regardless of their gymnastics or dance ability. However, the one component that I insist upon is flexibility. To achieve this, one simply needs consistency of stretching exercises-not years of specific training. A good routine is all about entertainment but it needs to flow evenly through each transition. Flexibility allows for fluid movement and polished transitions. Yoga, in my opinion, is the fastest and most effective tool to increase a competitor's flexibility.

Many of today's strength moves are created and originated from yoga positions. As a fitness competitor, it is in your best interest to enroll in a yoga class and make it an integral part of your training program.

Astanga Yoga (which is also referred to as Power Yoga) is a vigorous, strength oriented form of yoga that actually burns significant calories as well. This is the style of yoga that reportedly keeps superstar Madonna in top condition. Astanga Yoga involves a continuous series of postures that elevate your heart rate as well as strengthen your muscles.

Once you begin taking classes, remember that yoga is about expanding your body's abilities. However, you may need to initially modify certain positions. Once you become a consistent student of yoga, you will find that your flexibility has increased dramatically. You may also decrease your risk of injury during routine practices.

If you do not have yoga classes at your gym, I recommend the video, "Yoga for Dummies". It is very straightforward for beginners and it allows you to progress at your own pace. In time, you will see that aside from the benefits of a good state of mind, yoga can actually help to increase your scores in the routine round! Best of luck!
