Preparation For Success
Where do you begin, once you have made the decision, to compete in fitness and bikini pageants? Each competitor's approach can be different; however, one common rule is that you need a plan, as well as a support system!
First, find a mentor. This person could be a fellow competitor or a coach. A mentor should be someone who understands exactly what you are experiencing and his/her job is to motivate and educate, up to the day you step on stage! "I enjoy being a mentor to many of the new girls competing today. I love to share my success as well as my mistakes, hoping that girls can learn from all of my experiences", says rising FAP star Nicole Ferreira. Another great tool is the FUP powder room! This wonderful message board allows competitors to ask questions or to motivate each other!
Another preparation tool is to get on track with your nutrition and training plan. Keep a daily nutrition journal to assure that you are eating properly. Overdieting and overtraining will lead to poor scores at any competition! "I was so happy to learn that I did not have to diet or train like a bodybuilder to compete in fitness", says Toneka Pires, recent Fitness Atlantic Bikini champion. "Simply eating healthy foods like lean meat, fruits and vegetables with my occasional sweets, and training properly has made this experience so enjoyable!"
Whether you choose fitness or bikini pageants, or both, you must master the artistry of WALKING AND POSING in those wonderful heels! "I practice all year long in my shoes….that way, once the show arrives, the swimsuit round is much less stressful as I have prepared!" according to competitor, Wendi West.
Practicing in front of a mirror will help you get the feel for what looks good. Subsequently, have a friend videotape your performance "away from the mirror". Critique your performance and make notes of how you can improve while you watch your video presentation.
As you prepare, connect with a beauty/make-up consultant. This professional will help you select colors and tones as well as hair styles that look the best for your specific features. Remember, stage make-up is key in looking glamorous under those lights. This beauty consultant may also be able to suggest colors for suits and costumes that compliment your skin tone.
You may ask yourself, how do I pay for all of this? Competing can become expensive unless you have a PLAN! "I raised $2000 before ever stepping onstage", says Laura Cocoltchos from West Virginia. "I was planning for my first show and decided to ask my network of friends and associates in my business community for assistance." Laura says that a physical therapy office gave her $200 and a chiropractor's office gave her $100, a health food store gave her $50 and all of these businesses, in return, are hanging pictures of Laura in their respective establishments. "Instead of looking for a major sponsor, I decided to ask a variety of businesses for a small amount-wow, it all added up so fast!" according to Laura. Laura is a public relations specialist for a major hospital and she leads a rather hectic schedule, yet still found the time to raise money for her passion!
As the big day approaches, pack all of your essentials in a carry-on luggage bag. Pack your suits and costumes in clear zip-lock bags to avoid spillage from tanning products or make-up. Bring extra shoes, and a bathing suit for assurance. Also, bring an extra pair of sneakers in case the stage floor is too slippery. Make sure you bring a CD and tape of your music as well!
Being prepared for anything in life makes your journey less stressful and more enjoyable. Keeping a journal of your progress is vital as your pageant becomes closer. If any changes in your program need to be made, it is much easier to be able to "glance back" at your journey. Embark on your journey with confidence by planning your course ahead of time. Remember, your preparation will lead to SUCCESS!!
